The problem
Most portfolio projects are toy CRUD apps. Real SaaS products need multi-tenancy, role hierarchies, optimistic UI, service layers, and proper auth — skills that are hard to demonstrate without actually building one.
The approach
Next.js 14 App Router with a strict service-layer pattern: API routes never touch Prisma directly, all DB logic lives in typed service functions. NextAuth.js handles Google OAuth and credentials via PrismaAdapter. @dnd-kit powers accessible Kanban drag-and-drop. TanStack Query v5 handles optimistic updates and client-side caching.
The results
Multi-workspace system with four RBAC roles (Owner · Admin · Member · Viewer) enforced on every API route. Kanban boards with drag-and-drop task reorder, subtasks, file attachments, comments, and activity logs. Analytics page with completion rates, weekly activity charts, and per-project progress bars. Dark/light mode with system preference detection.
